UMU Hosts RENU Team for Eduroam Awareness Campaign
Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) today hosted a team from the Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU) for a two-day eduroam awareness campaign, which kicked off at the Graduation Square. The initiative aimed at registering students’ and staff devices onto the eduroam platform, a global Wi-Fi service that allows secure, seamless internet access across universities, research institutions, and learning centers worldwide. With eduroam, members of the UMU community can now connect not only within the Nkozi campus but also in many institutions across Uganda and internationally, without the need for repeated logins.
During the campaign, UMU staff and students were guided by the ICT team and RENU experts in setting up their devices. To access eduroam, users were required to have an active UMU email account and a strong password, which meant that default passwords previously issued had to be updated for security reasons. The support tent at the square provided hands-on assistance, ensuring that members of the community could transition smoothly to the new system. Many students expressed appreciation for the ease and convenience of the setup, recognizing the value eduroam adds to academic life.
At the conclusion of the campaign, all other Wi-Fi networks at the UMU Nkozi campus were scheduled to be deactivated, leaving eduroam as the sole official wireless network. This step strengthens internet security, ensures that only authorized students and staff access UMU’s digital services, and aligns the university with global standards in higher education connectivity. With the successful rollout of eduroam, UMU has demonstrated its commitment to providing world-class digital infrastructure that supports learning, research, and collaboration across borders.
