UMU at the 3rd Annual Farmers’ Retreat (Olusiisira Lw’Abalimi)—Buikwe District

Nov 7, 2025

The Annual Farmers’ Retreat (Olusiisira Lw’Abalimi) has steadily grown into a cornerstone event for Uganda’s agricultural sector—bringing together farmers, agripreneurs, researchers, and development partners to exchange ideas, innovations, and practices that strengthen sustainable food systems.

Organized by KAM Farm Limited in partnership with UYDNET – Buikwe, this year’s 3rd Annual Farmers’ Retreat is scheduled for 6th to 9th November 2025 at Kizigo Village, Buikwe District, under the theme:

“Building resilient farmer networks for healthy soils, healthy food, and livelihood security.”

More than 2,000 participants are expected, including youth, smallholder farmers, cooperatives, agribusiness enterprises, and academia from Uganda and across the region. The retreat will feature sessions on pumpkin, coffee, and banana farming, indigenous food systems, urban farming, agro-ecology, value addition, market linkages, and agro-financing.

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is proud to be part of this year’s retreat, continuing its strong commitment to advancing agricultural education, research, and farmer empowerment. Through its research initiatives and academic programmes, UMU has contributed significantly to the development of farmer knowledge systems, the promotion of agro-ecological practices, and the publication of numerous academic journals that inform policy and practice in the agricultural sector.

The University’s Faculty of Agriculture  has particularly championed research that bridges the gap between science and smallholder farming realities. UMU’s scholars have published studies on sustainable food systems, soil health, climate-smart farming, and value chain development, which have guided both community training and national agricultural discussions.

By participating in the Farmers’ Retreat, UMU seeks to strengthen collaborations with farmer networks and development partners, promote knowledge exchange between academia and the field, and demonstrate how research can be translated into practical, scalable solutions for rural communities.

UMU’s involvement in the Annual Farmers’ Retreat reinforces its broader mission of forming competent and ethical professionals who contribute to community transformation. The University believes that empowering farmers with research-based knowledge and innovation is vital to achieving food security, climate resilience, and economic empowerment.

As the Farmers’ Retreat continues to inspire agricultural excellence across Uganda, UMU stands as a proud partner and contributor to the ongoing transformation of the sector through research, education, and practical community engagement.
