UMU Martyrs Narrowly Miss Out on Gold But Settle for Silver at the AUUS Rugby Games
The AUUS Games 2025 rugby tournament, held in UCU Mukono, delivered a highly competitive and entertaining showcase of university rugby, with teams battling in a round-robin format that tested consistency, depth, and resilience. Among the standout performers were the Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Martyrs, who finished the tournament as first runners-up, earning a well-deserved silver medal after narrowly missing out on gold.
The rugby competition brought together several of Uganda’s leading university rugby sides, including Victoria University (VU), Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Makerere University (MUK), Uganda Christian University (UCU), Kampala International University (KIU), Kyambogo University (KYU). With every team facing one another, each match carried significant weight in determining the final standings.
UMU Martyrs’ campaign began on a challenging note with a loss to Kampala International University (KIU) in their opening fixture. The early setback tested the team’s resolve, but it also became a turning point in shaping their response for the rest of the tournament.
In their second outing, UMU faced Uganda Christian University (UCU) in a tightly contested encounter that ended in a draw. The match was defined by physical play and tactical discipline, with neither side able to fully dominate, but the result kept UMU within reach of the medal positions.
The Martyrs then found their rhythm and momentum. In their third match, UMU registered a convincing win over MAK, displaying improved cohesion, sharper execution, and renewed confidence. That victory marked the beginning of a strong run that would define their silver-medal finish.
UMU continued their resurgence with another important victory against Kyambogo University (KYU). The match highlighted the team’s growing belief and adaptability, as they controlled key moments and executed their game plan effectively to secure maximum points.
The tournament’s most anticipated clash came in the final round when UMU faced Victoria University (VU). In a high-intensity encounter between two top contenders, UMU rose to the occasion with a hard-fought win over VU, a result that underlined their quality and competitiveness, even though final standings would still place VU ahead on aggregate points.
At the conclusion of the round-robin series, Victoria University emerged champions and claimed the gold medal, while Uganda Martyrs University finished as first runners-up, earning silver. Makerere University completed the podium with the bronze medal, rounding off a fiercely contested rugby tournament.
UMU Martyrs’ journey to silver was defined by resilience and growth. After a difficult start, the team regrouped, learned quickly, and delivered consistent performances against strong opposition. Winning three matches, drawing one, and losing only once in such a competitive field speaks volumes about their character and rugby pedigree.
Though the gold medal narrowly slipped away, the silver finish represents a strong achievement for the UMU Martyrs and a solid foundation to build on in future AUUS competitions. Their performance in Mukono reaffirmed UMU’s place among the leading university rugby programs in Uganda — competitive, fearless, and ever-hungry for success.
