UMU Saints’ AUUS Title Defense Halted by KU on Penalties

The AUUS Games currently underway in Mukono produced yet another dramatic encounter as Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Saints locked horns with Kampala University (KU) in a tightly contested quarter-final clash earlier today. For the defending champions, the match represented not just a place in the semi-finals, but a chance to keep their title defence alive.

UMU Saints arrived at the quarter-finals on the back of a solid and disciplined group-stage campaign that highlighted their championship pedigree. The Saints opened their tournament with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Kyambogo University, setting the tone for their campaign. They followed this with a goalless draw against Makerere University, a match defined by tactical discipline and defensive organization.

The group stage, however, also tested the Saints’ resilience. A 2–0 loss to Nkumba University briefly threatened their momentum, but the response was emphatic. UMU produced one of the standout performances of the tournament with a dominant 6–0 win over Soroti University, a statement victory that underlined their attacking quality and secured their place in the knockout rounds.

Riding on that momentum, UMU Saints faced Kampala University in the quarter-finals with confidence and belief. The match lived up to expectations, with both sides battling fiercely across the pitch. UMU showed composure and character, matching KU stride for stride, and after 90 minutes the scoreboard read 1–1, sending the contest to penalties.

The shootout proved decisive and unforgiving. Despite brave efforts from the Saints, Kampala University edged the penalties, bringing an end to UMU’s AUUS title defence in a moment that left players and supporters heartbroken.

Even in defeat, the Saints’ campaign reflected the true spirit of champions. From navigating a demanding group stage to pushing a strong KU side to the limit, UMU Saints demonstrated resilience, unity, and competitive excellence throughout the tournament.

As KU advances to the semi-finals, UMU Saints will take pride in a campaign that reaffirmed their status as one of the strongest teams in university football. The title may have slipped away this time, but the foundations remain firm  and the Saints will surely return stronger.
