Launch of seven outstanding ACALISE enterprises/facilities at Uganda Martyrs University
Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) will on Thursday 20th June 2024 launch six outstanding enterprises/facilities procured under the African Centre for Agroecology and Livelihood Systems (ACALISE) Project at Uganda Martyrs
University-Nkozi Main Campus. The enterprises/facilities that will also officially be handed over to the University leadership at this same event include:
UMU-ACE Radio: A platform for disseminating knowledge, research findings, and best practices in agroecology and livelihood systems while fostering community engagement.
Postgraduate Students Hostel: A dedicated residence for postgraduate students, providing a conducive living and learning environment.
Feed Mill Facility: Enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting local farmers with cost effective animal feed solutions.
Agriculture Mechanization Facilities: launching of the multi-purpose tractor and its implements to improve farming efficiency and productivity.
State-of-the-Art Soil Laboratory: Facilitating advanced soil analysis and research to support sustainable agricultural practices.
Seminar Room for Short Course Trainings: A venue for training and capacity-building programs in agroecology and related fields.
The function will be graced by, among others, the State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo, the Chairman of the Episcopal Conference, Rt Rev Joseph Zziwa, the Executive Secretary of IUCEA, Prof Gaspard Banyankimbona, The World Bank’s TTL for ACE II project, Mr Shawn Powers.
Background to ACALISE
ACALISE is one of 24 Centers of Excellence in Eastern and Southern Africa under the African Centres of Excellence (ACE II) project, supported by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA) through eight regional governments. Hosted at Uganda Martyrs University, ACALISE has been directly financed by the Government of Uganda through a World Bank loan. The primary objective of ACALISE is to produce highly motivated, ethically oriented experts in agroecology and livelihood systems to address agricultural, nutritional, and environmental challenges in the region. The ACALISE project is structured around four main pillars: Learning Excellence, Research Excellence, Excellence in Governance and Administration and Sustainability. The launch and handover therefore marks the culmination of the African Centre for Agroecology and Livelihood Systems (ACALISE) project, a cornerstone of excellence in agroecology and livelihood systems since its inception in 2017. The event also offers a moment to reflect on ACALISE’s achievements and look forward to the future contributions of the newly launched facilities to the University and the region.
