Initiation of the new Uganda Martrys University Council members

Feb 11, 2025

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) recently inaugurated its new University Council members, marking a significant leadership transition. The ceremony honored the outgoing Council for their dedicated service and welcomed the incoming members who will guide the university’s strategic direction.

The inauguration of the new council members follows a period of introspection and preparation, culminating in a ceremony that not only celebrated the accomplishments of the outgoing Council but also introduced fresh leadership at a time when higher education institutions are facing new challenges and opportunities. The Uganda Martyrs University Council plays a crucial role in guiding the university’s mission, vision, and policies, ensuring it remains a leading institution of higher learning in Uganda.

The highlight of the event was the appointment of Archbishop Raphael p’Mony Wokorach as the new Chairman of the University Council. He succeeded Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok, who had completed his eight-year term at the helm of the council. Under Bishop Wanok’s stewardship, UMU made significant strides in both academic development and infrastructural growth, ensuring that the institution could offer high-quality education while upholding Catholic values.

Archbishop Wokorach, who was appointed to the role in June 2023, is a respected religious leader with a strong background in both education and leadership. His leadership philosophy emphasizes academic integrity, student empowerment, and a commitment to building a spiritually and intellectually vibrant academic community. His vision for UMU aligns with its long-standing tradition of academic excellence and community service.

The outgoing council was commended for their dedication to the university’s growth and for navigating the challenges presented by the rapidly evolving higher education environment in Uganda. Their efforts, particularly in expanding the university’s academic programs, improving infrastructure, and enhancing student welfare, laid the foundation for continued success.

Archbishop Wokorach’s appointment came at a time when UMU, as a Catholic university, was poised to play an even greater role in shaping both the academic landscape of Uganda and the moral compass of its graduates. In his address during the inauguration, Archbishop Wokorach emphasized that the university must stay true to its Catholic identity while also embracing the diverse needs of students in a rapidly changing world. He promised to lead with humility and vision, working collaboratively with all university stakeholders.

The Role of the University Council

The University Council is responsible for overseeing the management and strategic direction of Uganda Martyrs University. This includes approving academic programs, managing university resources, ensuring good governance, and providing guidance on policy decisions that affect the university community.

The newly inducted members of the Council are expected to bring a wealth of experience in various sectors, including education, governance, business, and community development. Their collective expertise is expected to enhance the university’s capacity to respond to emerging trends in higher education, such as the integration of technology in learning, the push for environmental sustainability, and the need to equip students with skills that are relevant to the job market.

The Council members are also tasked with ensuring that the university remains aligned with the broader goals of the Catholic Church’s educational mission while also responding to the evolving demands of modern education. With the global shift towards online learning, sustainable practices, and social responsibility, the new Council faces the challenge of keeping UMU at the forefront of innovation and academic excellence.

The initiation of the new Uganda Martyrs University Council members marks a significant turning point in the university’s journey. With Archbishop Raphael p’Mony Wokorach at the helm, the new leadership team is poised to lead the institution into a new era of growth, innovation, and academic excellence. The continued success of the university will depend on its ability to adapt to changing educational landscapes while staying true to its Catholic mission and values.
