UMU and the University of Notre Dame Unite for Global Research and Innovation

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Nkozi – June 30, 2025 Uganda Martyrs University was honored to host a high-level delegation from the University of Notre Dame (UND), Indiana – USA, for a strategic meeting aimed at deepening and expanding the longstanding Research partnership between the two institutions. The visiting team included:
  • Dr. Jonathan Noble (PhD) – Senior Assistant Provost for Internationalization and Global Executive Director, Notre Dame Global
  • Dr. Jackline Oluoch-Aridi – Director, University of Notre Dame – Nairobi
The meeting, held on the university’s main campus in Nkozi, brought together key stakeholders from UMU’s academic and administrative leadership to engage with the UND representatives in a focused discussion on partnership strategy, collaborative research, and community development initiatives. Since 2007, UMU and the University of Notre Dame have maintained a strong and impactful relationship built on shared values and a mutual commitment to academic excellence and social transformation. Over the years, this partnership has flourished through successful student exchange programs, internships, joint research projects, and community engagement efforts—benefiting both institutions and the broader global academic community. During the meeting, both institutions reflected on past successes and explored new frontiers for collaboration. Notably, UND’s Pamoja Africa Initiative and The IDEA Center were highlighted as critical platforms for fostering international research and entrepreneurship, particularly among young scholars and innovators. The dialogue also focused on identifying strategic areas for future engagement. These included:
  • Commercializing research outputs through industry partnerships and innovation hubs
  • Mental health initiatives aimed at student and community well-being
  • Development of sports and athletic programs to promote health, talent, and leadership
  • Collaboration in renewable energy and sustainability projects, aligned with global climate goals
Additionally, both sides emphasized the importance of faculty exchange, co-supervision of graduate research, and collaboration with industry stakeholders as key pillars to advancing the goals of internationalization and innovation in higher education. Speaking at the meeting, UMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Parick Kyamanywa, expressed deep appreciation for UND’s continued commitment to collaboration and shared optimism about the future of the research partnership.
“This engagement reinforces our belief in the power of global partnerships to transform communities. We are excited about the potential for co-creating impactful solutions to local and global challenges,” he said.
In response, Dr. Jonathan Noble reaffirmed UND’s commitment to nurturing meaningful research partnerships across Africa, citing UMU as a prime example of sustainable academic collaboration.
“Our shared mission of educating leaders for service and impact finds fertile ground here. We look forward to scaling our joint efforts in education, research, and social innovation,” he noted.
As both universities look ahead, the renewed momentum from this strategic engagement sets the stage for a dynamic future—anchored in shared vision, collaboration, and a commitment to global impact.
